From the Laozi · Chapter 74
When the people no longer fear death,
what use is it to threaten them with death?
The birthday lanterns glow against the cold of night;
two poisons, soundless, fall upon the jade-white plates.
Twenty years a healer, and all men called him kind;
only now he learns no salve can heal a wrong.
He closed a thousand wounds that had nowhere to appeal;
two deaths at a feast, and the court is shaken.
Judge Dee lifts his candle into the poisoned fog;
wordless beneath the lamp, the night is not yet done.
